The public is invited to enjoy free reiki treatments at The Studio in Honoka‘a on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from 7 to 8:30 pm. This free event is designed to be a reiki exchange and healing circle. Not sure what the heck reiki is? Here’s what The International Center for Reiki Training says:
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It’s administered by laying on hands and can be easily learned by anyone.
Note: Reiki practitioners of all levels are invited to attend and offer your services for free to the public!

We wrote awhile back about the new 4D movie theater at the Shops at Mauna Lani. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays through March you can take advantage of the movie Happy Hour and movies for just $4 from 5 to 7 pm.

This really is quite a good deal. If you’re into gardening or do it yourself landscape projects, you can save a bundle by picking up free mulch. As you can imagine, supply changes, but if it’s available? It’s free.
Pick up the free mulch at the green waste facilities located at Kealakehe and Hilo Transfer Stations.
Free mulch can be picked up with assisted mechanical loading from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Self-Loading in Hilo is from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and in Kealakehe from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. While supplies last. Assisted mechanical loading availability is subject to machine operability and time permitting. Please be aware that there may be a short wait time for assisted loading. Residential loading (pick-up truck loading) is free of charge at both Kealakehe and Hilo locations. For information on availability of mulch or loading at both Hilo and Kona locations, please call 808-929-8200 or email: BigIslandEKO@yahoo.com.
All locations are open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
To abide by road regulations, please remember to bring a pitchfork and tarp to properly cover truckloads of mulch.

From March 22-26, 2010 your keiki can learn to play ‘ukulele at the Waimea Community Education Building. It’s $75 for the entire week – 7.5 hours of instruction – so not a bad price for keeping kids busy during their spring break. The class is taught by instructor Dagan Bernstein, this program is open to keiki aged 6-13 with a maximum enrollment of 12. Sign up to secure your spot.

The Big Island Youth Jamm is ON from 10 am to 10 pm, March 13, 2010 in Pahoa – and it’s free. This showcase of Big Island talent features youth ages 13-21 years of age. This year’s event will also feature a fashion extravaganza with local models hitting the runway for everyone’s enjoyment. A variety of other activities and concessions round out the day. Information and product booths will also be present making the event not only entertaining but interesting and educational as well.

If you’ve got household hazardous waste, here’s your chance to get the toxic stuff out of your garage. On March 6, 2010, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm the Waimea Recycling & Transfer Station will be accepting hazardous waste. On March 7, 2010 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, the Pahoa Transfer Station is the place to drop off your stuff. What do they take? Check it out:
- Automotive fluids (including antifreeze and used motor oil)
- corrosives (acids & bases)
- all types of batteries
- fluorescent lights (tubes & CFLs) and chemical ballasts
- mercury thermometers
- unused or outdated prescription medications (no controlled substances or sharps & needles)
- aerosol canisters
- compressed gas cylinders
- oil-based paint & stains
- toxic garden supplies
- poisons
- miscellaneous hazardous or toxic household products

This just in — ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center will again present Merrie Monarch Festival workshops this year.
The special enrichment programs will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 through Friday, April 9.
These workshops will be on Hawaiian views of the world as reflected in chanting, how traditional knowledge is passed through mele, the plants used in hula tradition, the creation of traditional hula instruments, and there will also be a hula workshop.
Guests from Japan can also enjoy the sessions in Japanese, using the audio headset system. Audio translations are provided free-of-charge. Mahalo to County of Hawai’i Department of Research and Development and the Hawai’i Tourism Authority for supporting this program.

Ocean Sports recently opened a new Hawaiian Humpback Whale Center in the heart of Kawaihae. The Center features photographs and video of humpback whales taken by renowned nature photographers and videographers in Hawaiian and Alaskan waters. The Center will host guest speakers, including eminent marine naturalists, public policy makers, nature photographers and others. FREE, open daily, 8:30 am to 6 pm.
